So this game is nothing special, then? Not seen anyone singing its praises yet.

I havent seen anything spectacular with it yet. Could be that the desert map is just a pain in the ass. The games I played in were not fully populated and often the teams were lopsided. Teamwork was non-existent. I think primarily due to it being an open beta, there were lots of people playing that are unfamiliar with BF. Once the full game comes out, I'd like to believe that the game will be much improved with more dedicated BF players, better maps and servers.

Reached rank 20.

They really picked a piss map for Conquest. Half of the map is open desert. It actually might be more than that which makes running from point to point a pain in the ass. Their some horses, tanks, and planes to help however its too damn barren. On rush its slightly better, but attacking is hard as hell sometimes when you have to funnel through a narrow cliff. It makes getting through hard as fuck. On the defenders side we had one side covering the right shooting anything that tried to get by, while me and another person kept throwing unlimited gas/incendiary grenades. Bless you ammo resupply.

I have run into a few bugs and errors.

Starting the game, but being unable to deploy at all despite seeing all the points and etc.
Starting the game and seeing a blank map and waiting for it to kick you out/restart application.
Character freezing during play.
Gun not shooting occasionally(only snipers so probably an issue on my end).
Screen going black.
Menu screen freezing.
Ammo amount not showing up occasionally.
Scoreboard not showing up.
Next game immediately starting without giving me a chance to exit the game.
Poor party design(You have to be in a play station party to be in one).

The beta is fun when it works.

It's hard to judge it yet based on the content available, we still don't know anything about the campaign yet and other game modes and equipment locked out. I personally am really enjoying it right now, evident by the fact that I am level 36 right now :-D . I would like to point out that the sound design in this game will be 10/10, every sound produced by guns, tanks, planes, mines and explosions are genuine (not that I've experienced them in real life, but you get what I mean  ). Air combat is probably my favourite thing in the whole beta right now, I fucking love the planes.

Overall I quite like what I see in the beta and will buy the full game on release.

It certainly needs some polish, I have encountered some annoying bugs. Particularly, accessing the options mid-battle seems to be a big no-no. Generally though, I am really enjoying it and looking forward to release. Recorded my first time in a tank anyway
